Dr. Alazmi received her Ph.D. degree from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in December 2018, where she worked with Prof. Pedro Da Costa on understanding the fundamental aspects of synthesis and characterizations of graphite oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). More specifically, she worked on studying the applications that could benefit from rGO/metal/metal oxide such as supercapacitors, CO2 capture, and electrocatalytic applications. I am also currently working as an Assistant Professor and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at University Colleges at Nairiyah at the University of Hafr Albatin.

MIT Fellowship Research Abstract: 

Dr. Amira Alazmi's research at MIT focused on electrochemistry cell design and development of electrode material for flow batteries.

In this project, the Dr. Alazmi and the Brushett lab team explored the scope of their approach to synthesizing rGO electrocatalysts and their performance within redox flow cells. Specifically, they investigated the relative importance of different processing steps (i.e., oxidation, reduction, drying) in the graphene synthesis which control the surface area and pore structure of the resultant powder. Notably, through process optimization, they observed a more than three-fold improvement in surface area as compared to hydrothermally reduced GO, 364 m2/g vs. < 100 m2/g. They then deposited these high surface area materials into porous carbon felts via a flow deposition to generate electrodes for redox flow cells. The performance and durability of the rGO-catalyzed electrodes will be studied as a function of redox chemistry and cell operating conditions in the future. They anticipate that the strategies explored in this project are broadly applicable to RFBs and other liquid-phase electrochemical systems.
