Dr. Banan Alhazmi
Biography:
Dr. Banan Alhazmi earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where she specialized in membrane separations under the mentorship of Professor Suzana Nunes and Professor Gyorgy Szekely. Her doctoral research focused on developing macrocycle-based membranes with enhanced molecular selectivity in organic solvents for pharmaceutical and fine chemical applications. Dr. Alhazmi's work has been published in leading scientific journals and was recognized with the EMS Best Paper Award 2025.
Dr. Alhazmi is committed to advancing sustainability and environmental stewardship. She has contributed to sustainability initiatives through leadership roles with KAUST Students for Sustainability and Saudi Youth for Sustainability. She believes that sustainablity is both an individual and institutional responsibility and continually seek opportunities to expand on this principle within her community and throughout her professional career.
MIT Fellowship Research Abstract:
At MIT. Dr. Alhazmi will work with Professor Zachary Smith's research group, where she will broaden her expertise and explore new applications of membrane technologies and acid gas sweetening. Her research focuses on polymeric membrane materials for acid gas sweeting and hydrogen separations, with broader implications for decarbonization and climate change mitigation. Her research interests align closely with the energy transition and efforts to improve the sustainability within oil and gas sector in Saudi Arabia.
